I made up my own poem to a midwife who retired recently who was with me for my first two ever births as a student midwife.......I've hidden her name in case she would not want anyone to see it!

An ode to E**** on her retirement......from an ex-student midwife.

Full of trepidation and excitement, I pushed open the door,
My first birth awaited, (this is 1984...)
I already had my 'witnesses', supposedly I was ready,
But my shaking hands gave me away, they were anything but steady.

Then the midwife entered, I wondered who it would be,
We had no such thing as mentors, supervised by who was free.
I hoped it would be someone who would help me feel adept,
My fragile confidence wobbled, I could almost have wept.

Then E**** lent over and muttered quietly in my ear,
"You'd better get your pack open, the head is almost here..."
I fumbled to get gloves on, trying hard to look composed,
By the time I was ready, the womans' legs had locked closed!

E****'s master class in coaxing showed me how it could be done,
Her hands on mine, the babe was born, the woman birthed her son.
The woman expressed her gratitude; I was flying on cloud nine,
I wore a silly grin upon my face for quite some time.

So that was my first birth, and I went on to do many more,
E***'s support and ways of working affected me to the core.
A wise midwife who you are always happy to have hover
Outside the door, ready to help if you anticipated bother.

Now; no more getting up for earlies, I'm sure of that you will be glad,
Your retirement has been well earned, but still I feel more than a little sad.
I will miss you as a colleague, a friend and a mentor,
Who showed this former student midwife how to birth a baby and placenta......
If it's not pouring with rain, I'm either in the garden or at the lottie! Probably still there in the rain as well TBH....🥴

Baccy they are brilliant, Deb what a brilliant poem, the lady i want to send my poem to was a mentor for me on two occasions and was part of the reason i chose to work where i did. the roles reversed quite recently as i had to be a mentor for her for one of her degree modules i feel so grateful to her for everything she did for me all the support etc, and i shall miss her badly and i want to let her know this  :)
