Another sign of spring - and a missed opportunity

Ceratonia

Went out for my normal run on Saturday, around 5pm, just as it was starting to get dark. I go through some woods and into a large open field. I often see hares there, but they are generally running away by the time I see them and not usually very close.

It was extremely windy on Saturday and I think the howling gale masking my footsteps and carrying my scent away made it hard for animals to sense my presence. I saw some deer in the woods, and then some hares really close up as I went into the field.  Two hares up on their hindlegs boxing only a few metres away and they didn't seem to notice me. (I suppose the fact that one was fighting off the advances of the other was another reason why they weren't paying full attention?)

Stood still, turned on my phone to take what would've been a great wildlife picture, even had time to focus, only for the thing to start ringing... Hares are so fast, I just had an empty field in the shot.

How lovely!  It must be wonderful to be able to run in areas like that - or to run at all come to that.
