I have a lot of prunings of raspberry, blackcurrant and redcurrant bushes and would like to use them for pea sticks but am worried they will root (particularly the raspberries) and spread any disease.

I'd love to hear if anyone else uses these with any success.

Not for my tall 2M+ varieties but I'd be interested in what people think..  ???

Chances are they will root. They'll also be in the ground long enough to establish a root system which could be a problem to eradicate. If you can't get hold of twigs or such like, hammer a couple of 3x2's in at each row end and fix cross pieces. From these you can run string/wire lines along the rows.

Use the prunings upside down, they cant root that way......or can they ???

Hi Rhys,

I'll let you know as this is the first year I have used them for my peas, they looked too good to throw away.  I think I must have read somewhere that you could do this.  Last year I used plastic net and it was a nightmare so am hoping as they are natural it will work.  It looks good, I thought kind of rustic ;D

Willows will root upside-down, but I've ever known anything else do so.

I bet Blackberries will, thinking about it. But only if the growing tip is present, what do you reckon R_B?

They soon produce new growing tips if they need to. Avoid those two at least! I once made the mistake of using willow for bean wigwams, and by the end of the season I has thriving willow trees! I've tried using it for marker sticks, and even putting them in upside-down, some still sprouted.
