I though I would post this for all the parents ready to pull their hair out after the school hols.  Its keeps well and my kids love it.

Microwave Playdough Recipe
A recipe I had to share because it actually works (and it's edible in case they put it in their mouths, as they tend to do!)
2 cups flour
1 cup salt
15g cream of tartar
1/2 - 1 bottle food colouring + boiling water to make up 2 cups
3 Tbsp cooking oil
1. Place dry ingredients in a bowl and mix together.
2 Mix liquids together and add to dry ingredients and mix well.
3. Microwave on high for 4 minutes.
4. As soon as it is cool enough to handle, knead well. It will be sticky, but the more you knead the less sticky and more doughy it will become. Store in an airtight container and it will last for ages - just knead every time you take it out to soften it again!

Ooooo, thanks for that 8)  It'll come in handy later in the year when I 'sit' my g/daughter & her friends during afterschool playdates.......'playdates'? hmm....horrible american expression I think :-\ but we'll have a lot of fun with the playdough - after we've played hopscotch, perhaps :D

My little boys love playdoh but they always leave it to dry out so this is perfect stuff

Mine last for ages in the fridge is a plastic bag.

Back to this, if I may.I've printed off the recipe & put it in my passport - well, seemed the logical place to not forget it ;D....is this the stuff one can also leave to dry out then paint (or bake in a low oven then paint)?

Thanks.

I'm no to sure I have never tried it before, my kids play with it to often to let me try and bake it, if it does please let me know

Hyacinth

Unless someone else knows, I'll try a) seeing if it will dry & b) hardening some off in a low oven. Will be April-time, when I visit the grand...

So what are the 'dough' figures I see in the bakery made out of then...anyone know?

Grandma

Alishka - I think you're thinking about 'salt dough' which can be dried in a home oven and then painted or varnished. I don't remember the recipe but got all my info from a super 'dough crafts' book by Isolde Kiskalt. Try Googling her name - or looking on ebay?  :-*

Hyacinth

Thanks Grandma, will do 8)

Salt dough is slightly different the basic recipe goes:

one cup of salt
one cup of flour
half a cup of water
colouring (optional)

Knead until smooth & no longer sticky. Keep wrapped in clingfilm to stop it drying out.

Variations :
Add more flour and you'll get a softer dough
Add more salt and the aspect of the sculptures will be granular.
Add wallpaper paste and the dough will be more cohesive
