now who was it i sent some peanuts to, how are they getting on my plants are in bloom!

not me!..........I prefare mine already salted  ;D

Never heard of anyone growing peanuts, how are you growing them?

But I would love to try some if you could let me have any spare seed (if you can save them), or swap if I have anything you need.

i dont have any at the moment i only planted monkey nuts from my parrots junk food mix, i only buy this rarely cos its fattening and the peanuts I have have been roasted so are no good, go into a pet food store and buy 4 or 5 open them and plant them i have 3 thoroughly excellent plants as i say now in bloom the peanuts grow under the ground sorry i have none to send you

Thanks for replying, I thought you had the seeds from a supplier or saved them from the ones you grow. I will try buying some peanut shells from a supermarket and try some.
Now for more questions.
When did you sow them?
How deep?
Do you grow them in the ground or in pots?
Indoors or outside

I will type in the info I have in the next day or so on night shift at the mo so no time just yet mine are just in pots and growing well sowed them in may june time i guess

i have no idea when to plant them mine are in pots in the garden doing their own thing no idea when to plant them mine have orange flowers on them soon

Peanuts need a lot of warmth. You cannot put them outside anymore.
I think I would try them in a hot greenhouse or in a warm window sill. But I'm not sure they would last over the winter.

If they do, you will probably have a super crop as they need a very long season.
I tried peanuts last year. Sowed them in february (window sill), planted them out in april and they were OK-ish when I harvested in september.

Try 'search' as there were other A4A-peeps who had some experience with peanuts.
As I recall Cambourne said she would give it a try this year.

I grow some cotton one year. Took the seed heads from a feild in Turkey, only got flowers no cotton as its not hot 4 long here :( was gonna knitt a hat ;D

thanks Garjan they are in pots on the patio so once the temp starts to drop i will bring them indoors not sure anything will come of them but worth a go

Do have a go, because the flowers are lovely.
And don't forget that the flowerheads bend down to form a peanut in the ground. So allow for a smaal strip of earth around the plant.

well garjan they are already in flower how long from flowering til they are harvestable?

Last year I did not keep a allotment log, so I'm not sure.
I remember them flowering end of June and harvesting in September. But that was to rescue them from being waterlogged and I probably took them out too soon as they were not all fully ripe.
So from flowering to harvesting took quite some time.

I have bought some peanut seeds and am planning to have a go this year! I was thinking about planning a few now? what do you think?

according to my book although it is american it says sow indoors 3 weeks before last rost or outdoors after last frost but they are difficult to transplant i can send you the text from the page i have on them if you like

Three weeks before the last frost would be the end of April (in the Netherlands, that is). In my opinion that would leave a too short period for the peanuts to fatten up when grown outside.
Perhaps if you plant them in a greenhouse that would be enough, though. Never tried it.

As for transplanting: I thought them not too difficult to transplant.
I had sown them in a plastic bag with soil and they came out easily. I did not notice a check in growth after planting them at the lotty.
As the root grows to be very long compared to other seedlings, you need to be carefull when transplanting them. It's easy to break or damage the root.

keep us posted as I'm very curious how other people cope with this crop.

I'm going to try mine in rootrainers inside, sorry for being so thick, I take it I put them in, case and all  ???

I did not take them out of the shell. But that means that, when all the peanuts inside germinate, you will have two to four seedlings per shell. With a very long root each.
Do your roottrainers have that much room?

no, probably not, I normally start one bean per trainer so, maybe I'll pre germinate the peanuts and then transplant them  :)
