Allotments 4 All

Since we're still a good month or so off any real planting action I've been itching to grow something in the meantime. I was wondering about growing chillies on the windowsill in the house... Surely if I'm growing them inside I could start them now couldn't I?

If so, does anyone have a good variety for indoor growing?

My housemates have grown cayenne and jalapeno successfully this way - they still have cayenne plants fruiting on the kitchen windowsill. 

I always grow them indoors on the windowsill. Tend to have problems with whitefly though.

I too have had some success with growing indoors, but also have pest problems.  Not sure if they were whitefly, but whatever they were left a clear sticky substance all over the window and sill.  Also iirc there was a web like material on the plants - i thought maybe spider mites?

Started Cayenne from seed and also had a 'Dorset Naga' that I purchased as a plant from the Westdean Chilli Fiesta.  I saved some seeds from that so I may have a go at growing one or two of those this year.

Another thing to mention is that I often have many of my flowers drop off without setting fruit.  I thought this was due to a lack of pollentation but even with the use of a paintbrush it still happened.  Actually I think one of my first ever questions on this forum was about that very problem!

Well worth a try if you have a sunny windowsill going spare.

I find Apache F1 a good size for the windowsill. Seed is a bit expensive but it's a cracking plant and I've over wintered them successfully.  Fruit is a little hotter than a standard jalapeno.

Don't forget that chilli seeds need over 20degC to germinate. .
