Allotments 4 All

iy anyone fancies wrapping up for a bit of post turkey digging im plot 42 drayton road allotments if im not there start without me!!!

ahh stig so far it is the best offer i have had how ever stil got an essay or two to write otherwise i would be there with jingle bells on  :D

miserable bunch!went on my own too wet to dig but got some much needed fencing repairs done,do your worst roger rabbitt im ready for you!!!

Lazy so-and-sos, we built a raised bed, dug over three raised beds, collected 15 bags of horse **** and spread it over the beds.  Took 2 hours this afternoon, and it was lovely.

talking of raised beds..forgive my ignorance but what is the point of raised beds???

Apart from tidy edging, I have often wondered that myself ...

WHY USE RAISED BEDS...
1. Raised beds warm up quicker in Spring, allowing the vegetable growing season to start earlier.
2. They improve drainage and make weeding, sowing and harvesting easier.
3. You don't walk on the soil, so less compaction
4. Create structure and clearly identify areas essential for crop rotation.
5. They allow a wider range of plants to be grown on either difficult soils or those with an inappropriate pH as you can fill them with a suitable soil mix.
6. You can net individual beds against pests etc
7. The beds can protect small seedlings in their early stages from wind
8. Higher yields. Because most raised beds are less than 4 feet wide, gardeners don't have to walk through the garden to access plants. This means the plants are less stressed and that more intensive gardening practices like wide row and square foot gardening can be used.

9.Weeds are not as big of a problem if you do your prep work when you create the bed. You can also grow plants closer together, which crowds out many weeds.
10. Awkward slopes can be easily managed with raised beds. This also prevents soil slip/creep

when  the ground is so waterlogged nothing can grow in it, if you build them high enough, you can grow all sorts of stuff  ;D

And you don't have to put on wellies to do the digging and can collect veg on the way home from work without ruining your clothes/shoes.
