antipodes

since there is not much gardening going on right now, just thought I would relate a funny story. A neighbour on the plot had given me broccoli but it never grew like broccoli and I thought it was "cow cabbage" (cabbage greens, kale, whatever the name is) and I had eaten some of the leaves but hadn't found them to be terrific.
except this weekend I noticed the plants were...changing. In fact they are those Romanesco with the green pointed hearts!!! he has given me a terrific veg without me even knowing it. My other neighbour said "oh you've done well with those" (I didn't like to admit that I didn't even know what they were, chuckle!!!). I am hoping they will be big enough to eat at Christmas because they look ever so pretty on the plate!
2012 - Snow in February, non-stop rain till July. Blight and rot are rife. Thieving voles cause strife. But first runner beans and lots of greens. Follow an English allotment in urban France: http://roos-and-camembert.blogspot.com

Fantastic antipodes, I love Romanesco. What a lovely surprise for you.....happy eating!
I was born with nothing and have most of it left.

You have done very well Antipodes.    :D

I tried to grow them a couple of years ago and the heads were tiny.  I left them on a bit longer to see if they would grow some more but they went slimy so I couldn't eat them.

Well done!  :)

This has become one of my favourites, but it's so expensive in the shops. Will need to try to grow some next year!

I tried to grow them in South London, so far not very successful. But my favourite among broccolis. And a bonus to have them at this time of year. Can you harvest them already ? How did you care for them ?

I have no idea if they are meant to grow here!! (Southern Brittany, France) and I did nothing at all! except just pull off the bottom leaves when they went yellow, and kept them tidy!
They seem to have appreciated the wetter weather recently... since I doidn't even know what they were!! it's hilarious...
