A quick question on bindweed.

I have 8 or so bags of weeds from clearing my plot but there are bindweed roots etc. in every single one. What can I do if anything with it?

Could I use it as compost if I just leave it in a corner until this time next year? Seems a shame to waste it all (next time I will try and keep the nasties seperate!)

Whatever it was I didn't do it but if I should have done then I have!

You're right that there's good stuff in the roots which you don't want to lose - that's one of the reasons they're so persistent.

The usual advice is either -  to thoroughly kill the roots by drowning in a bucket of water for a few weeks, or leaving to completely scorch in the sun and then compost them normally  - or put them in a black sack, tie it up, make a few holes with a fork and leave it for a year or so until it's totally broken down into a highly nutritious compost.

Whichever way you choose, make sure you don't let it get back into the ground in any state to start growing.

I have heard tell on some long lost threads buried deep on the forum that bindweed can be stir fried and eaten.........not sure I'd recommend that route for 8 sacks full though!

Thanks MattD, I'll leave them in the bags and pop them out of the way for next year :)

Yes, I have always bagged up my "noxious" weeds, and after a year or so the result is very gratifying.

A while ago, I came across a recipe for Bindweed Vodka. I think the recipe was from Siberia.

I normally keep these disguised puppies chained to the sink, with enough slack to reach the cooker!

Better make a v. quick exit to avoid the inevitable incoming.......

.....whoooooosh....................gone.

Artichoke, does that work with all orrible weeds? I've got piles of couch roots that I'm going to have to do something with eventually. Didn't really want to rot them down in water as I thought that would stink...
For myself I am an optimist - it does not seem to be much use being anything else.
