I've got a photobucket account and have got a few pictures stored there including some personal ones of my family......I read today (in another group) that 'other people' (meaning anyone) can access these pictures.....is that correct? surely not, if it's your own account

would appreciate your comments

As far as I know your account is password protected unless you choose to disclose it to let other people have access, but how secure this is from hackers et al I'm not sure....
If it's not pouring with rain, I'm either in the garden or at the lottie! Probably still there in the rain as well TBH....🥴

I would imagine that anyone can view these pics otherwise they would not appear in these forums. The password protection simply restricts who can upload or delete files from the site. If you require greater privacy for sharing within a limited group you would be better getting your own web space with htaccess control.

There are two ways to go on this. The first is to use your webspace (usually provided by your ISP). The other is to get your own domain and rent space on a hosting server. The second is probably the better option as it is yours while you keep up the payments. The first has the disadvantage that if you want to ghange ISP's then you have to download everything and put it on the new ISP space.
.
You access the space by FTP software (it is the only way that you can see what is in the space), people who have the URL can only access the file that that URL relates to. I run a website for a club and post the activity file in a directory for our printer to access. No one using the website can see that file until I put it on the public space. That way we can make updates if necessary and the members do not have non updated copies.

goodness!............my mind is in an utter state of confusion (well maybe not confusion) but scared by all I've read.

so all my family pics/photo albums that I store in my computer under 'my pictures' can be viewed by anyone (if they decide to hack it) and also my photobucket pics....I've also got all the same pics stored in another programme called Picasso (because I can crop them in there) so assume they can be 'got at too'? :o

no idea where to begin to obtain webspace or my own domain....just the thought of trying to 'do it' or whatever it takes to have it....scares the daylights out of me

am obviously a coward when it comes to computer knowledge and usage/accessibility.

appreciate your comments tho - not being funny or ungrateful but.....please don't try to explain to me because I just know I'll get totally lost along the way.....also, I've very little 'memory' left within my computer so guess that could cause problems too....(have only got a total of 256mb) think I've got that right :-[

Surely - so long as you use the URL rather than the Share Url link, you only show the photo you want to show??

Hot_Potato

Oh again!! :o

when I put a picture on a topic I do it by copying the last one - the image

think when I tried the other way - couldn't get it to work.

will it make a difference?

So long as you do not click the share box on photobucket they remain private to you, as for hacking into your computer it is very unlikley that the hackers would want to do this just for photographs. if you do not have a firewall installed then I suggest that you get one, Comodo is a good free one and can be found on the net. I have said it before but I will say it again, the photos that you submit to photobucket can be used by and sold by Photobucket without your consent

just to say I've got a Firewall installed (think it's part of my Norton A.V) thanks for the reminder tho :)

a bit horrified by this bit tho

the photos that you submit to photobucket can be used by and sold by Photobucket without your consent

why would they want to do that?

WASSISNAME

The simple answer to that is MONEY, I am not referring to family photographs but there are some excellent Landscape and Portrait Photos on their site, at least there were when I was using it

Photobucket have a very informative forum here
The main thread that covers the topic being discussed here would probably be this one under the sub heading found here.
Hope this is useful. :)

Obviously, once pictures are posted on to forums etc they then come into the public domain. When that occurs, anyone is able to copy them. However the legalities of such are a minefield as to what they can be used for once copied. There are many websites that supply royalty free pictures which can be used (smilies, animated gifs etc),some of them allow totally free usage others ask for a link or acknowledgement. Some will insist on no changes being made to the original.
If you don't want anyone copying your pics, there are watermarking software programs available with pop ups restricting 'right click'usage. You could also mark them with your own copyright label, which if found elsewhere without the label could then be subject to litigation.
Sadly at the end of the day as in real life,if someone is intent on stealing from you,all security measures can be breached. :o

Is it not the case that if you mark your photos 'Private' then noone can see them? (in Account Options)

djbrenton

if it's just storage you want, you could have a gmail account and upload them there. They aren't accessible to anyone else then.
