Most evenings when I am at the plot, another site member comes past as he takes his dog for a walk. (More a case of the dog pulling his panting master along). Nothing wrong with this as the dog is always kept on a lead, made to stay on the pathways, and master brings a carrier bag and trowel to clear any doggy doos. Usually he stops for a gossip etc. and frequently asks me what this or that plant is growing on my site. Last night he stopped to ask me why don't I grow any food?

Well, I am puzzled by this and would like to know why this list is not considered food?

Radish
Broad beans
Spring onions
Carrots
Beetroot (3 types)
Swiss chard
Onions (4 type)
Garlic (5 type)
Shallot (2 type)
Globe artichoke (2 type)
Jerusalems
Peas (Early - Mange tout - Maincrop)
Runner beans
Sweet corn
Courgette
Squash (3 type)
Tomato. Many different.
Capsicum
Chilli pepper
Aubergine
Oka (experimental)
Ullucus (experimental)
Exploding cucumber (experimental)
Raspberry
Damson
Grapes (2 type)

And a few flowers;

Banana
Canna
Dahlia
Mirabilis

OK. So I grow a few flowers. Well quite a lot of flowers, but why does my list not count as food? Could it possibly have something to do with the fact that there are no potatoes? :o

Eristic,  it's not considered food because it doesn't come on a plastic tray wrapped in cellophane  >:(
is it in the sale?

Oh some seasoned gardeners amase me too.
When I took on my plot it was rough and one chap came to me and said " You better get rid of that dock it will spreed" well in amasement I looked at him and said its Horseradish and the only thing I got free with lottie.
Even weeds were finding it hard to grow, half a plot and when dug over found 8 worms but I had the Horseradish growing.
I grow huckleberries I like them hes now telling every one I am growing deadly nightshade and I am a witch.
If I was a witch I would know of a spell to get rid of weeds for good ha ha.
Some strange gardeners out there ha ha

The problem could be that you're not growing spuds.

A lot of staff at my local supermarket can't even recognise various veggies when their cleaned & polished what chance have they straight from the ground - I'm always amazed ???

You need a spaghetti tree.  ;D
Don't throw paper away. There is no away.

Where did you get the Ullucus from Eristic? I have the Oka but always on the look out for something new...
;D

debster

and jamie oliver wonders why kids cant recognise fruit and veg perhaps we should all start growing turkey twizzler treas or putting signs on the veg to say what it is

Rosyred

Lets hope the person don't have children what hope do they have. You got a nice selection there Eristic

Mrs Ava

Spuds and cabbages, that is what you are missing.  There is a family on our site and they have about 5 plots, 1 is all cabbages, 1 is all spuds and 1 is all runner beans.  They think my globe artichokes and pumpkins are a waste of growing space!

ruud

That are the samepeople who think that milk comes from a milkfactory instead of a cow.

Last year I was thought a bit weird because most of my plot was covered in squash plants! This year someone's already worried about the sweet potato as he thought it was large bindweed when he got close enough to see it wasn't french beans.

Haha marge, me too, did a double take the first time I saw sprouts growing.  ;D ;D
You been goofin' with the bees?

Collected tonight:

You can live on it I suppose...

Something for the soul too.

In my earlier list I forgot the curly kale, purple sprouting broccoli, leeks and sweet potato. There is no room for spuds no matter how crafty I am until next year when the extra plot is cleared.

The Ullucus came from The Realseed co along with the Oka but they only had a small amount released for trialling. We will have to wait until November before any harvest is gathered in and assessed.

Nice one Eristic - love the 'soul food', by the way.

Your lottie site is quite close to mine, incidentally I'm at Cricklewood, just before (or under, on the map) the Brent Cross junction.
Lesson for life:
1. Breathe in     2. Breathe out     3. Repeat

Mrs Ava

Gotta be spuds then.  Narrow minded some people.  Love the cardoon flowers!

Tinkie_Bear

What a fabulous list of things you grow, next time he comes past tell him to bugg*r off !
