I followed the instructions on the back of the packet for spacing my radishes when I planted the seeds.  And they mostly all came up wonderfully so I'm happy.

But radishes aren't exactly very big plants and there does seem to be acres of space between each one.  I'm sure that there must be a good reason for the spacing stipulated - I was just wondering what it is as I could have fitted many more into the space with out them getting very close to each other.

we just sprinkle the seed thinly, si d, then thin out the ones that grow big and push the soil around the ones that're left in  ;D

Summer radish can be sown thickly... have you got a winter radish? They need much more space..

Looking at the plants they didn't look like they needed all the space they had, and I'm sure that I didn't pull them out too early - the radishes are quite big.

Radish seed is cheap enough. Thumb and finger sprinkle along the furrow. Thin as required. Much like lettuce.

You don't even need to plant them in rows, just sprinkle a few over an area about a foot square and repeat in a different place every 2 weeks or so. If you have neat raised beds like me, I find that about 50 seeds 1 inch apart in a four foot row, also every 2 weeks produces more than we can eat.

It sounds laborious but careful sowing like that saves thinning time later, and a packet of seds lasts all summer.

thanks for the advice!

have just whacked some more in a little closer this time so can put something else in the other half of the bed.

afraid I still have to do them in rows though so that I don't end up mistaking them for weeds when they pop their heads up!
