Others on here have mentioned this...Now we have it doing the rounds in North Yorkshire. Clip from Craven Herald, Skipton.

LEAFLETS pushed through doors in Skipton and surrounding areas urging donations of old clothes for the "Children's Welfare Foundation" have been confirmed as a scam.

The leaflets urged people to leave out old clothes which would help organise "holiday accommodation in Blackpool for many critically and terminally ill children", build a school in Nepal and fight malaria in Africa.

But North Yorkshire Trading Standards, confirmed the collection was a scam.

I ALWAYS look for a charity registration number and i check it on the web.

We tended to take our old clothes to the clothes bank as then we'd be sure that they were going to a real charity.  Unfortunatly the scammers are now breaking into the local clothes banks so we aren't safe doing that!  So I guess it's going to be a case of taking them into the charity shop now.

I get similar leaflets through the door and it bothers me how misleading they are. It takes a bit of reading & a sceptical mind to determine they are in fact from a profit making company, not a charity.
is it in the sale?

There are a lot of scams around - I heard an article on the radio and they suggest doing what Cambourne says - check for the charity number etc.
Apparently some of the rogue collectors go round and take all the bags of clothes left out for the genuine charities before they can get there.

I have seen the kids swarming all over clothes banks at times and its always when the travellers hit town.
You can pick your friends, and you can pick your nose, but you can't pick your friends nose

The depths that some people go to.  >:(  >:(  I put a bag of my daughter's clothes out today. I went to add some more very soon afterwards and the bag was already gone. I hope it was the correct people who took it and not some scummers.

That's been going on a while. I think it was on a consumer programme earlier in the year. Makes you spit doesn't it? Who are these people? How can they have such revolting ideas?  >:( >:( >:(
Don't throw paper away. There is no away.

Usually if you are putting a bag out for a reputable charity, they drop a small printed thank you note through the door, or at least they do out here.

The Heart Foundation have ID on, and sometimes come in a van with the logo on.  I have never had a thank you note stuck through the door.  We frequently, and I mean at least twice a month or more, get leaflets and they go straight into my recycling pile.  I save up all the clothes and they either go into a genuine bag, to the local scouts/brownies jumble sale or off to the charity shop.

Ours go to the charity shop and I like to help them take it out the back because they are always friendly and seem genuinely happy to see you. ;D ;D ;D

Nobody would even want to steal my old clothes

jjt

They'd have trouble with mine, I'm generally in them.

They came around my house for clothes collections for poor eastern European countries so I give them some of my better clothes, half an hour later they brought them back and said they wasn't that poor.   :o :-X :-\ :'( ;D ;D

My son's school gave out bags from Bag 2 School scheme. I can't find the exact details, but for every ton? weight of clothes, the school gets £200. I googled but I don't think they have a website. I did find something from a Harrogate newspaper:

QuoteTo help please have a sort out of your unwanted clothes, shoes, curtains and bedding. You will also be helping the school to raise money. These bags will be weighed and collected on ... and the school will receive 25p per kilo. Some of the clothing will go to Eastern European countries to be sold and other items may be recycled into new products
