Allotments 4 All

Skipton N.Yorks suffered sever flooding a few years back followed 3 years later by another serious flood. I'm wondering how Skipton is fairing at the moment. Anyone?
How are other towns/villages managing at the moment?

Amazingly, even after all the rain we have had, Essex seems to be quite dry.  I popped to the allotment with mum this morning and she dug spuds, and the ground was quite dry, not waterlogged at all.  No squelching under foot.  The children have been watching Newsround and can't beleive the flooding and rainfall.  Take care you lot!

Really bad floods round here [Barnsley] poor folk were still tidying up from last weeks floods. Its still banging it down. We are ok live at top of hill.

West Deeping is wet but there are so many cuts to feed the old mills that flooding is (I am not going to temp fate)-was talking to a chap over Spalding way earlier and it sounds bad around there and Boston

We are getting a hammering in South Yorks ..Most rivers are over their banks  ..Roads ,railways closed
Just Heard RAF  hellicopter is lifting 12 folks trapped on a roof in Sheffield ..
It certainly has put some water down this weather ..
Got soaked twice today going to lotty to feed hens and rabbits .
To top it off we have got very strong winds with it too ...

Where I live is OK (as is the lottie), unfortunatly the site that I'm working on is in big trouble.  We are digging a bronze age round barrow (c.1800-1500BC).  We've dug the area for a few years, it's on light gravelly sandy soils and drains really well.  But this year: flooding in all trenches, everything covered in silt in the mornings (doesn't help that the field is ploughed down the slope rather than across) and we've spent as much effort digging dykes, canals and other flood defences as we have done digging the archaeology.  The archaeology itself is being badly eroded by these floods - it's really quite heart breaking. 

BTW, just in case anyone thinks I'm being a bit hypocritical - in that we are destroying the archaeology that we are digging anyway - modern deep ploughing is rapidly destryoing the site so if we don't dig it now it'll be gone anyway in a few years.

Anyway, I'm praying that the rain will ease off now because my car died today so I'm now faced with a 30mile each way cycle commute as well as a day of digging, each day for the rest of the week  ::)

Our nearest weather recording station is about 6 miles away at Pitsford reservoir.

Heard on the local TV news tonight that so far this month they have recorded 155mm of rain compared to the average for June of 55 mm. That's nearly 3 times the average for the month, but that comes nowhere near the highest of some 270mm in June, ten years ago. Mind you if it keeps up the way it is this evening, who knows the record may go yet!!!!!!!!

Took a while to get home tonight, 14 or so miles from Wakefield, where I work. An hour and a half as opposed to half an hour, as almost every village between work and home had roads closed (I'm only 3 or so miles from Northener).

We are lucky as we are near the top of a hill, and the lottie is a bit lower on the same road.

I may need a hand at the weekend though, and a bit of advice as I've never planted rice before.

I work in Boston and it is indeed fairing badly, lots of flooding in the surrounding villages, and I drove along 3 flooded roads to get there this am too.

Haven't dared venture down the lottie yet  :-X

Pretty wet here in North of Cambridgeshire, am thinking of buying waterwings for my chickens, they are really not enjoying it, and are too stupid to go in theur house when it rains, I got them in tonight though, thank goodness as it's now the wind we have to contend with!

AT least there's one good thing, I live in a completely wooden house, so if it does flood, hopefully I'll just float away like an ark!!! :D

Hope the winds die down before bedtime, I can never sleep when it's windy - might hit the Baileys as a precaution!

Here in Hampshire we've had very little flooding, nothing like in other parts of the country.  It's got a lot to do with the fact that we are on chalk, and it soaks the water up like a sponge, then doesn't release the water till it's full.  Then our fields turn to lakes and things get serious.  But I don't think we'll have a hosepipe ban here this year  :)

I just wish it would stop, we're getting stir crazy and fed up with it, then we hear the news and know that we are really the lucky ones.

I cant actually open a window here is blowing a gale rain not 2 bad feels like november.

using spring cleaning as a diversion just cleaned and reorganised ensuite and bathroom. Still have to make bed but having spent 2 hours on the bed room so far, i can now see the carpet  :D

Prink have just taken dog out for last walk in the garden and I think my sunflowers will be horizontal by morning, rain has eased. Last night the dog got me up 3 times during the night and it was raining each time. Still compared with a lot of people we have so far been very lucky. Just pick me up Prink when you are just floating past please.

Wind is still howling, I've got plants which have blown over, garden furniture which seems to be waltzing around the garden, and I should think that my chickens are scared to death - still toastie warm in here, (might be the baileys!) and off to try to get some sleep in a minute

Sheffield is really bad ... 3 people dead so far, loads of roads closed - they've just turned into rivers.  Half of the city was without leccy earlier, not sure if they've got it back yet.  Helicopters rescuing folks from tops of buildings, cars floating down rivers / roads.  Our kitchen roof is leaking like mad ... need to try and find a roofer to come and fix it pretty sharpish.  But we are both safe and out of reach of the flood waters.  No chance of making it back to work tomorrow apparently - the main road I use is now 5ft under water.

 :) hope Sheffield is doing OK today?

took one brother over 4hrs to get from Lincoln to Nottingham yesterday, every road they went down turned into a river

my other brother took over 7 hours to get from London to Lincoln yesterday , he didn't know any of this was going on until he got up here

There is danger of Hulley reservoir dam wall going just outside Rotherham..
Cracks have appeared  in the wall and parts of 3 villages have been evacuated also there is a power station threatened ... They are trying to pump some water out to decrease pressure on wall...

River Ouse in York wasn't as high this morning as I had expected, although I suspect it hasn't yet reached it's peak yet.  Our pond at home had flooded from underneath the liner last night so this morning it is only half full.... not what you'd expect from all the rain and I hope we haven't lost too many tadpoles.
Also my plastic greenhouse has died, but it was on it's last legs so not surprising really!

The River Severn has flooded in Coalbrookdale to quite a depth. How bad Ironbridge is with its new flood barrier I din't know. I am going to cycle down and have a look in a minute. My allotment which is on top of a hill is flooded in places and I have been digging ditches to try and drain some of it this morning.
