Especially those from charities that provide a freepost envelope. So, I have put in the envelope for a credit card (from my bank), the stuff for National Trust, and in the National Trust Envelope, have put some other charity gumpf that came through the door. My mother received one from British Red Cross (?) which had a 20p coin enclosed.

This week we go over to wheelie bins-I can reduce my rubbish by around 25% by marking all junk mail `return to sender` ;)

I receive numerous requests for contributions for children in third world countries. They tape 12p to the letter. When Charlie was alive and we were reasonably OK financially he would tell me to send a fiver each time. Now I feel guilty if I don't send something so I have been taping  a £1 coin along with their 12p but they just seem to send more frequently so now I save several and then send them back with just £1.
Couple of weeks ago I received request from Sue Ryder (young Lorna manages one of their charity shops but she wouldn't have given them my name) maybe it came about because of the small donation I sent in memory of SS.
I am afraid I just have to stop somewhere but almost feel embarrassed about the whole thing.

Giving to charity is obviously the right thing to do Lorna, but it should be your choice when and how, not theirs.  :)

I hate it too, we had a thread on here before, someone said they put all the stuff in the freepost envelope and send it back!

Nothing against charities, but emmy has it right!

I have to admit to writing "Not at this address - Return to sender" on all junk mail - and Telephone Books!  :)

Why not just sign up for the mail preference service it is free to register & drastically reduces the amount of junk mail you get. You can also register to stop telesales both on your home phone & your mobile.

and I automatically say when on the phone to any company I'm dealing with:

"Don't send me anything or ring me up, if I want you to quote for business I will contact you"

Only one's not getting the message are BT & I'm enjoying giving them grief.
is it in the sale?

Baccyman. Thanks for link. I had registered for unwanted phone calls, has really made a difference. Have now registered for unwanted mail.

Baccyman, we have mail preference and Phone preference - however, you will still recieve junk mail, if it is addressed to you, so I either return it, or phone company sending it and ask to be removed from mailing list - over the past year I would say that it has definately worked.
Also companies can still phone you, just not to sell you something - we found that they still called and conducted "surveys" - like "do you have a conservatory?" and next thing you know a conservatory brochure arrives in the post addressed to you!

All in all, I'd say that it does work to ither return or call companies and ask to be removed from mailing lists - I probably still get 1 or 2 unwanted pieces of mail a month, but nowhere near what it used to be

i found this preference thing does not work with the mail the trick is not to fill in any surveys some came from the preference survey itself i know cuz i made up renewal dates

My sister-in-law (RIP) who owned her own property got so fed up with calls she then kept them chatting for ages and then said "Oh that sounds good I will tell my Landlord" Her way of getting back at them.
