Hi all,

Have just visited the bottom of the garden, during a very small break in the rain, and found that all of the haulms on my maincrop, maris piper have snapped!  :-[ :'(

Does this mean, no crop??? It looked to me when I last looked at them that they were just stating to form buds.

What do I do?

Please help.

If thereare still buds at the base, they should be OK - but much delayed.

If not, I doubt that they will be worth while.

Do? Wait, & let us know what happens.

Thanks Tim,

Do I remove the snapped tops? and if I do, can these be composted? (might as well have some use out of them, if no spuds!)

Will let you know how things go.

QuoteDo I remove the snapped tops?

No!! they may not be fully broken and if this is the case it will allow a bit of photosynthesis to take place.

If later on the tops start to turn yellow and die back then cut them of then!

Thanks Tee Gee & Tim

All may not be lost then!

It was just so gutting, to see them in such a state this morning, as a first timer I was just so pleased when they were looking so healthy & I allowed myself to dream of the first roast potatoes!

Will keep you posted!

Have a 'furkle' & see if you have any small taters. You could use them as earlies.
Did you earth up?
Eskimo Nel was a great Inuit.

All my potatoes have been flattened - not looked closely enough to see if they are broken.  Also my onions are all flat.  :'(

Hi Telboy

Yes, I've earthed up three times, but, I will resist having a "furkle" for another week or two!

Sparkly

I have been away for a couple of days. I am now panicking about what I might find during my visit to the plot tommorrow  :-[
