I've just been reading my veg book and I have planted my cabbages too close together. What will happen to them if they are planted far too close like 10 cms?

Planted brussel sprouts too yesterday and i'm going to try and move them later today. What a twit! They were the best seedlings i've grown so far.

:)

you will get smaller cabbages the closer you plant them Rosyred, / shades x
grow your own way

okra

they should be fine being replanted - they are quite tough plants

Give them a good soaking hours before you move them.

And try to take up a coherent root ball.

Then water in.

Unless they have been in over a fortnight they should come up easily and will be none the worse for the experience!

They don't mind being moved more then once as long as you kep the root balls intact.

Look on the bright side, yes they will be smaller, but the ground area covered with cabbages will leave less room for sunlight to help push up weeds ;D ;D ;D

Mine are only 20cms or so apart for this very reason.

I looked yesterday when I was up there and they were a bit more than 10cms so i'll leave the cabbages but I moved the brussel sprouts so they had more room.

Multiveg

Close planting of brassicas can encourage some of the diseases - one year, planted sprouts a bit close together and suffered from white blister (a blister with the top of the leaf yellowish/purple, the underside with white fluffy bits). Some of the actual sprouts had this blistering.

I would have thought that 10cm for Cabbages would result in zilch. Thin them now & transplant the thinnings.

And Sprouts need AT LEAST 50cm?

Tee Gee

I'm with Tim and can we put it into old money!!

10cm=100mm=4" and when you consider I prick out my seedlings into a 7cm=70mm= 3" approx this would mean there is only 2.5cm=25mm=1" extra to grow in

This cabbage head below is roughly 20cm=200mm =8" and thats not accounting for the outer leaves which could make them at least twice the size of the head i.e. 40cm=400mm=16"

Meaning cabbages should be around 15"-18" apart minimum, or as Tim says 50cm=500mm=19" approx

Sorry for the maths lesson but I must admit when you say ten something and you know a cabbage is eight somethings you can see where errors can occur when going metric ???

Rosyred

Perhaps I should thin them a bit more haha That cabbage Tee Gee is so big but mine never get that far really.
