Georgie saw these at Kew. A name would be nice. I think I a know what they are, but confirmation is always useful
TIA for Georgie.

second pic looks like a type of lilac to me...

sweet-pea

yeah, I'd say the second was a lilac too.  The first looks familiar but I can't think what it is at the mo.

Carol

First one, at first glance, looks like an Astilbe and second one a Lilac.  ;)

dandelion

First one is Smilacena racemosa, second one is a Judas tree.

That is what I thought Dandelion.

Hey Eric, thanks for doing this for me.  (For some reason I'm having trouble starting new posts and to a lesser extent replying to posts.)

The second one certainly isn't Lilac but I had no idea what either were so thank you for your suggestions.

2nd definately a Judas tree, I am sitting here looking at one in my garden now.

Georgie

It's certiainly beautiful I think.  I know I could look this up but would one be suitable for a small garden do you think?

The one on the picture is probably Cercis siliquastrum. I have Cercis canadensis variety 'Forest Pansy', which has GORGEOUS purple leaves (the flowers are just a bonus really  :)). According to the label this grows to 5 or 6 m (I've seen references on the net to 10 m though). The specimen I planted two years ago in a semi-shaded spot looks more like a multi-stemmed shrub than a tree, so I am hoping it will not grow too tall. And if it does, I'll just cut down the big  boring laurel growing next to it  ;D.

This tree will flower at a young age. In fact mine is barely  2 1/2 ft high and flowered for the first time this spring.

Was the tree you saw in Kew the one growing along the path near the Tellytubby house grass mound? I remember being impressed with it, and with the Amelanchier growing nearby. I saw a flowering Judas tree at Capel Manor Gardens last weekend. This one was probably 6 to 7 meters tall.

Georgie

Thanks for the detailed info Dandelion, I feel a bit of research coming on.   ;D

The tree I saw was at Wisley, not Kew, but as Eric would say, 'tis all lunnon way 'appen.'   ::)

And you went to Capel Manor without popping in for a cuppa?  I live ten minutes from there!  Hope you enjoyed it.   ;D
