My Gijnlim is certainly early and very prolific, but there are a lot of very thin spears. Backlim is a bit later (only a week or so), but the spears are much thicker - which is what we prefer. I'm more & more inclined to put in another bed of Backlim, but then the purple one seems interesting, too. (If I moved the early rhubarb, the next bed would be free as well.... Only a thought....)

Yes, agree: "instant" & "asparagus" don't belong in the same sentence! I planted mine in March 2002 and last year was the first full cropping season.

Picked up a 3 Purple Pacific crowns yesterday from Chessingtons GC - suppplier was Unwins.  Now have to find somewhere to put them - probably dead anyway!

Yes , just planted Purple Pacific a month or so ago , then heard radio 4 prog about how unstringy and edible raw it is ;D.
Got it from Dobbies which i think is only in Scotch land.
I managed to get an early(Connovers Collosal) , mid season(Backlim) and late (PP) ;D.
The Backlim and Purple Pacific spears are about twice the thickness of Connovers - all 1yr old crowns.

Just a follow up. The  Pacific Purple asparagus crowns which I ordered on April 29th in the evening were shipped on the June  1st arrived on June 2nd and the crowns are super. I got them from Gone Gardening Cheaper then T&M, 10 plants for £10 plus shipping of £3 something. XX Jeannine
