And definitely never, never buy them from a supermarket - they are not worth eating. Runners have to picked and eaten fresh - we wouldn't eat them  if I didn't grow them. The same with broad beans as well.

Hear hear. They must be picked young and eaten fresh. Variety also dictates flavour. I grow red flame and I like to pick a handful to munch while I walk round the plot to where the peas are growing. :D I would go hungry before I bought runner beans from the shop but that is why we have lotties.
