I know diddly about okra,I planted it as advised, it germinated well and quickly, it grew to 4inches tall quickly...then stopped and it hasn't changed in 3 weeks. The plants are healthy but  standing still. Why is it being so difficult and daft to me. XXJeannine

Jeannine-welcome to the Okra club-a motley crew with hope and enthusiasm tempered by experience-it`s a swine to get more than a very few fruit from but has flowers to die for.

You have joined a club of optimists(fools? ;D)

Jeannine

Happy to be a member but why has it stopped growing. This one grows 8 feet as well XX Jeannine

Why has it stopped growing?-because it`s an okra-it will either pick up and grow away or sulk and die.

The variety I grow is called `Pure Luck` -and aptly named

saddad

Tried it several times in the past; germinates, grows a little, stops, sulks and dies...

Even Mr Flowerdew admits it`s one of the hardest things to get a decent crop from-so we are in good company

mine never grew higher than around a foot ... produced three flower buds - none of which I got to see flower.   It keeps you on the edge of your seat, making you think its about to so something, when in reality it shut up shop and disappeared to the seaside weeks ago  >:(

okra

I thought for a minute I had done something wrong. Its a strange plant and needs constant heat, even the slightest check seems to kill it off rapidly, but I keep trying with the hope of suceeding one day

Well that explains a lot!  I didn't realise it was a difficult plant, so just bunged in a few seeds to see.  5 out of 6 have germinated, but they're all very much doing their own thing.  Guess I'll just let them get on with it then  ;D

dtw

I'm going to sow mine tomorrow.
I tried some last year in my garden, but the soil is rubbish and they didn't get past 1ft tall.

I think they originate from Africa, so hopefully we will have a hot summer, with some lovely thunderstorms for the other plants.  :D

Robert_Brenchley

I wouldn't mind the hot summer so much, as long as we get plenty of thunderstorms. I wouldn't bet on it though. Hot and dry like last year, more like.

sally_cinnamon

Can I join the challenge?  I tried last year too, but they didn't get past about 6 inches or so.  Have just put three in the airing cupboard to germinate, so fingers crossed.!
;D
Thank you to all who donated to the Moonlight Half Marathon Walk in aid of St Catherine's Hospice - my mum and I raised just over £300!!!    ............     Thanks!  :-)

Don't worry J, it will pick up  :) even mine in my Spanish greenhouse stayed the same for a few weeks! Growing now though! Funny little plants to get going! I'm out of this competition, In Spain it grows like a rocket when the summer kicks in!

Jeannine
