What are you going to use as supports for your sugar snap peas?  I was going to use pea mesh which is made of plastic but I think I favour hairy string as it can be put straight on the compost heap and will rot.

I was going to put a couple of stakes in the ground about 4ft high and 3ft apart, and fix strings on then with staples (the type you hammer in, not from a staple gun) about every 3".  Do you think this will be sufficient to hold the peas?  As always, suggestions more than welcome.

Two Choices

I save the prunings from the pear tree and last years Budhlia prunings. That way they don't shoot and tend to last a couple of years. Failing that I like the idea of a couple of canes and the brown degradable string. The time and effort it takes to untangle a net for me is too much hassle

chicken wire, every time..we've got loads over from the fruit cage ..just put some canes through the holes and stick them in the ground  :)

is there a chance any of you could post a pic of how you have used the canes with string? i have made my little wig wams but when you talk about setting up structures with string (i have read the pea sticks thread too) i wouldn't know where to start. I have bought plastic netting, but prefer the idea of doing it with string now. cheers

I do not have a photograph, but last year I used all my twigs on my orinary peas and did not stake my sugar snaps or mangetout.
Guess what! I had a great crop as the plants seemed to grow up each other.

Vegemite, one tip when using string and canes is to knock in some of those little telephone wire staples to the canes (you can usually just press them in), then you can guide the string round/ through them.

I'm leaving my petit pois and dwarf peas to self support, medium sized have birch tree pea sticks, biggies are growing up wigwams with string supports like a spiders web wound round that I can compost at the end.. ;D
If it's not pouring with rain, I'm either in the garden or at the lottie! Probably still there in the rain as well TBH....🥴

Mine are going to be up wigwams same as my sweet peas. But then I'm only growing biggies.
