I've just started a new job recently, and will be getting a company car. I have never had a company car before, and i'm hoping someone on here might be able to give some advice.

My new employer will buy the car of my choice, and will pay for my private fuel.

So, how do i work out exactly how much per month i will be paying ? I have found some tax calculators on the net - but dont quite understand how to translate what they come out with to a monthly figure...

Also it has to be a Ford or Vauxhall and Deisel, i'd prefer a somthing fairly big ie Focus, Mondeo but not a people carrier, any reccomendations ?

Finally - i bought a new car last year which i now have to sell, its been in the Auto Trader, Ex & Mart and on Ebay Classifieds for over a week - but not even one caller. I'm pretty sure i've not over priced it - so any tips on shifting it would be good too.

Thanks in advance...

Firstly

Speak to your boss and see if you can get a car allowance for using your own car rather than having to use a company on.

Secondly

Try and get a hybrid car :) not deisel

Thirdly

Get a Ford Focus there great!

I reckon this is the car you should get, very handy down the allotment. It's a ford and it's deisel

keef...firstly take a look at the websites of the various manufacturers...you need to get a vehicle with low co2 emissions...I have a vectra est as a company car and its great...plenty of leg room..loads of boot space for the lottie bits etc...the only problem you get hit hard by the tax man...

Take a look at the HMRC website. They have an area on their to calculate your monthly car tax bill and put in the manufacturers details....hope this helps

get yourself a Landrover because if you are not spending any money
on the car you can afford to spend it on fuel..............repairs...........
..........tax  etc.
Perhaps its not such agood idea its just that I love em.

From costly personal experience :'(

Two things:

Tell HMRC asp that you have a company car, your employer won't need to do it until the end of the tax year and then you have to pay back the arrears.

Although you may have a fuel card it is better to have some kind of payroll deduction for reasonable personal fuel use.  It was £20 pm when I was at work, but then fuel was a lot cheaper.

Oh, and finally keep a track of your mileage business and personal.

OH had a Mondeo that ticked all the boxes i.e. getting from a-b comfortably

Aparrantly vauxhall are taking ages to deliver cars (we but direct apparantly) - 6 months at least !!!

So it has to be a Ford - think i might get a mondeno as they are bringing out a new version later this year and have some good deals on. Not the best car in the world - and a total rep-mobile, but hey ho - i can still blat about in my mini (not BMW  >:) at the weekends.

Sussed out all the tax now - and i'm probably going to pay my own mileage.

Thanks for the tips.

I was goig to say that unless you do quite a high private mileage the tax on the benefit in kind is so high its better to pay your own way but it looks as if you've worked that out already!
