As many of you who visit the chat room know, I play the classical guitar and have volunteered my talents (?) at a local gig, to support budding guitarists. Foolishly I said I would do at least half an hour, forgetting just how much music that entails.
Anyway, I have been asked a few times what I will be playing, so here is my material, split into three sets of four pieces each, shown on the next posting.
I have attempted to put links in which have midi (music)files attached, they cannot recreate the guitar sound but give you an idea of the tunes. Where there is no link, I couldn't find one!

Happy listening

Meanie, you still haven't told us where you are playing so that those of us in reach could come to support you!

Thanks for the links tho and I know you will enjoy it and have great success!  :D

Just wanted to wish you all the best for tonight Derek.  Hope that all goes well and you get squillions of standing ovations.   :-* Good luck or is it 'break a leg'.
Take time to stop and smell the flowers.

Thank you for all your good wishes.
To paraphrase summat I heard somewhere - 'win, lose or draw, my conscience will be clear as I will have given it my best shot'

Pass my apologies to those who expect to see me in the chat tonight, as I don't intend to be!

Update 'After the Event'

It was a truly splendid evening, worthy of all the effort put in. It was organised on a traditional club basis, names on a list, with an interval for copious amounts of food (the whole evening cost £2.50).
I played a total of the first and last sets (2 sessions), during the evening there were 18 performances, but only myself and a couple of others were solo performers.
The overall standard was extremely impressive, there are some really gifted players around (myself not included), and I gather everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
The evening closed at 12pm, with a list of email addies, so everyone can be contacted for the next event (possibly in July).

My next gig is at the Police Club, on the 25th June . . .

Well done to our very own Derekthefox!!!We're proud of you.

Glad all went well, Derek.  You are so lucky to be able to do something you enjoy and which gives pleasure to others too.  I don't play any instruments and have a voice like a frog (off-key alto!) but love all kinds of music.

Good on you for giving your time to encourage other musicians too.
Equality isn't everyone being the same, equality is recognising that being different is normal.

Good on you, Derek ------ and a brave man too, to take on the first set of the evening!  That's a tough one!

All best for the next one - Gavin

Just a thought, Derek - you might be interested?

20 years ago, my landlord in Yemen was a great oud player, and I've always wanted to have and play one.

Well, last month, I finally got one!  Now I just have to start learning - a bit different from my enormous, heavy, folk guitar!

All best - Gavin

Congratulations Derek!  So glad everything went so well and it has spurred to on to continue.  We all knew you would be great.

Terrific that you got so much out of it, sounds as if you had great fun!  ;D

Thank you all for your compliments, the musical world is generally one of mutual support, which is what makes is worth perservering.
Just as a comment Gavin, the first spot is often easier to pick up, as no-one else wants to take it, and there is no-one to have to follow!
Often, there are less people in the audience too, as several always arrive late for various reasons. On this particular occasion, I had to contend with a PA system which was difficult to adjust for my guitar, so the sound was terrible, and hence compounded the nerves. I changed that on my second spot and played into the microphone, much more relaxing and effective  :)
I am not familiar with the instrument you mention re Yemen, please give more details.

Hi Derek - the Oud is the Arabic/Iranian precursor of the lute (and great grandfather (?) of the guitar.

Beautiful instrument, VERY sexy shape - and a real b*gg*r to hold!  http://www.brianprunka.com/oud/index.htm.  To play?  Don't know yet!  But a well-played oud is magical - sings in very different way to a lute or a guitar.

It's played with a plectrum - supposed to be an eagle's feather, but a strip of plastic milk bottle will have to do me!  And it's fretless - to play the quarter (sometimes) notes of the Arabic and Persian scales.

And Ozzy - good to see you back in full flow!  :) :)

All best - Gavin
