I want to try growing onions from seed this year.....but how soon should I sow them? I live in Northumberland and have a heated propogator...but once they come out of there ... they will be going in a large unheated polytunnel...advice from those of you who've done this before would be really welcome....  :D

depends on the type, I've planted winter hardy spring onions in pots and globe onions to try, again in pots, on the windowsill, I've covered a bit of land in the poly and will plant them and throw a bit of fleece on if it's freezing  ;D

I grew some red onion seed from seed for the first time last year, although they were not huge, it was not a bad crop. I have got some started in a heated propogator at the moment

.....but how soon should I sow them? ....

The traditional day for monster exhibition ones is Boxing Day. For a normal crop early March indoors is soon enough or outdoors when the soil warms up - try the bottom test!  :D

Okra, I put some red onion seed into a heated propogator today too & wonder what to do with them when they come up.  Can I pot them on & put them into an unheated greenhouse?  The conservatory is getting a bit full.

Marymary I will transfer mine into an unheated g/house but I will probably wait a week or so to allow them to get a bit more established.
