I am interested in growing beans for drying - i use a lot of these in cooking and would be so super to be able to supply myself! I can smell tomato and bean soup already. Does anyone grow beans for drying here? I think that i would like to have one whole area just for beans.

Hi, Squidette, we grew some bush barlotto last year, for drying, we didn't get lots as the slugs ate some, this year we are growing climbing barlottos so here's hoping for a better crop, we also leave some runners to dry for soups 'n' stuff
good luck  ;D

Great threads! Am much encouraged by reading them - thank you manic and supersprout.

Growing what i like to eat seems like a plan, rather than growing things that i think i 'should' be growing. I like brussel sprouts a little, but not Passionate about them, if you see... I did ask one of the other plotters if they knew of any beans for drying that did well in the strange micro-climate where the lotties are, and he replied that i didnt want to be 'dabbling in all that foreign stuff'.

On another note, the children and i have named her. From this day on, our earth shall be known as... Lola

I will be growing a few green beans, but most will be for shelling. I have several varieties, including borlotti of course. I will be growing runner beans ONLY for shelling, since no one in our family likes the pods. I am always on the lookout for different beans that I can get my hands on, and hopefully build up a seedbank for future crops.

Derek :)

The impossible is just a journey away ...

Great name for your plot Squidette, haven't thought of naming ours, but will ask the girls and see what they come up with!
Definately grow what you actually want to eat- or you'll have to give away all your efforts!
Don't throw paper away. There is no away.
