Alishka - by Pound Shop do you mean Poundstretcher? We have one nearby but not a Pound Shop as such.

errr...dunno...worth looking tho?..Pound Shop, Poundstretcher, Poundland...Robert (I think it was he?) got some at the 99p shop last year.

Poundland, and yes, the 99p shop (several branches round Birmingham, I don't know whether it's anywhere else) had them as well. I find it's worth checking both; last year, they both had fleece, but the 99p shop had pieces twice the size of Poundland's.

The cloches are on the small side, but well worth having to start things off. I had 50 last year, and I'll be using them like mad. If it's at all cold, put the end sections flat on the ground with a brick or something on top so the cold air can't blow through.

I just use the top third of a 2litre pop bottle

I've tried that but I found the size really limiting.

we got some free sweet bottles, you know the ones you buy !/4 of sweets from, cut the bottoms off, also from the wiki, demijohns with the bottoms off, work quite well, we use the 2ltr plastic bottles for lettuce etc  :)

I got the wire and fleece separate from the pound shop and made my own. The wire I used was stronger than that in the cloches.

RB - do you place one cloche over each individual plant then?  It probably seems like a basic question, but never having done it before I just don't know!  ???

Personnaly I use one per plant as that is all you can really get under the width of a 2litre pop bottle.

The pop bottle over each plant worked a treat last year on basil and peppers - its seems to allow them a chance to get establsihed quicker

The Poundland variety are about three feet long, and I just link however many I need to cover a row. Or I put seed trays in them, or whatever. They're versatile but as I said, too small. I'd really like something the size of the old glass Growers' Barn type.

Oh i see, they're the long tunnel type ones.  I imagined they were the bell type ones, which presumably would cover one plant each.  Thanks for clarifying!  ;D

so there's hope for me yet! have been eagerly reading everyone's posts about bargainous things to be had in all these shops but Norwich doesn't have a Netto or a Wilkinson's, and the local Woolies that used to be a great big Big W that sold lots of gardening stuff in an oudoors section is now a much smaller regular Woolworth's with no outdoors bit. I've managed to find a local Lidl though, and the refurbished Poundland opens tomorrow, so they better have some good stuff in!!! the only shops I've found so far for garden bargains in Norwich are QD and good old Roy's of Wroxham.
