My Jamaican brother in law treated us to the traditional jamaican dish of rice and peas last week, it's made with kidney beans and you need to soak these for hours before using them. He'd made too many so put some aside in a bowl where they lay forgotten until I discovered yesterday that they were sprouting. Well, I thought, nothing ventured... and planted them in my allotment - am I going to get anything or was that a waste of time ?

Mrs Ava

Well, my grandad and the Devon family all call Runners 'Kidney Beans'.  What colour were the beans?   ;D

ina

The normal kidney beans that I know are dark red/brown and have the shape of................... right.......kidneys hahaha. The only bean to make real chili con carne with.

Who knows Ruud, under the proper conditions?
Hope it doesn't turn out like the lima beans I bought, only type suitable for our climate and expensive too. They were a total failure.

Good luck with them and let us know, if successful, I will try them too.

Hi beer belly,i dont know what ina is drinking or in what shape she is behind her screen, but i suppose she is mixing something.Bytheway i was also thinking of sowing some kidneys.I have some from a trade with somebody from the states, they are white and green kidneys

aquilegia

I quite often get white kidneys - Cannelini beans (or something like that). Never seen green, though!

ina

Hahaha, that's what you get when you sneak A4A during worktime.

ruud

Yes i have seen green kidneybeans the french call them flageolet, green kidney shaped beans. They make a great soup of it.

ina

I've seen those, they are kidney shaped but much flatter than kidney beans hehehe, I'm not giving up.

ina

The ones I planted were red - just like the tinned kidney beans you'd normally use in con carne.
I'll keep you updated to how they come one (or not)

A co-tenant of mine tried kidney beans a few years ago. Again, in our warmer, than yours, conditions, they were not successful as they require a very long season, or very warm nights, to keep growing.

Beer_Belly

I might rig a small poly tunnel for them then - any idea how tall they grow ?  -  I was the laughing stock last week - the old blokes asked me why I'd put wigwam structures by my borad beans :-(

john_miller

70-90 cm. Try to plant closely so they can be self supporting.
