Can you use garlic bought in the green grocers or do you have to buy special varieties ?  ???

It depends where it comes from. If it was grown in northern Europe it'll be OK, if it's a southern variety, it might or might not. Try it and see.

Thanks we call into Lidl first thing in the morning. Will let you know later in the year how I get on.
What other things can I use that can come from the supermarkets ?

supersprout

My son brought those huge white beans back from a supermarket in Greece, and they grew and cropped really well :D but a lot of veggies grown for the supermarket are grown for handling/keeping quality and looks, rather than taste :P

I think I can remember my Dad using Marrowfat Peas in his garden in the late 50's Can this be done or is this not so?

Thanks

manicscousers

I've done it, a long time ago, can't remember if it was any good, must've got something out of it, though, also, herb seeds, fennel, etc, i think  :)

Blue Bird

Oh well will give it a go and see.  When is the best time to plant out peas normally?

STEVEPARTRIDGE

Happy New Year to you Bluebird, another thing that you can get from Lidl at the moment are Shallot : Escalote Grise
Khaki coloured shallot rarely seen in Britain. A gourmet shallot prized in French cuisine with its intense and concentrated flavour.

They are £0.99 for a net of about 8-10 at Lidl,  Thompson & Morgan are selling them at £5.49 for about 15 so definitely a good bargain and worth a try, regards Steve.

of course, you can always use bought potatoes, I know it's not ideal but we used to do it, even grew them from potato peelings  :o

Thanks for that Steve - Can I also say that I have visited your web site and found it very incouraging if only I manage to get 10% near to your achievements I will be made up - and also found the video of the leeks very informative.
