Allotments 4 All

 :) Just got myself an allotment today and I'm desparate to get started. The gentleman who had the plot before me has kindly cleared it all for me (actually it's immaculate!)

I understand you can plant Garlic in December, which I plan to do asap, but does anyone have any other suggestions for me?

Though the ground sounds well prepared - I would also ensure a good shed & if you have one check the roof does not leak.  You will need somewhere to sit with your flask & sarnies when if weather changes for the worse when you are there. You will also need this for somewhere to store your tools.  ;)

I sowed my Broad Beans (Aquadulce) last weekend.  A bit late but the packet said you could sow them up to January, so I am hoping they will germinate!

You must be so excited, I know I would be.  Enjoy it.. :)

You can still plant soft fruit bushes if the soil is not frozen. Raspberry canes, gooseberry bushes, blackberrry etc

again, if the soil's not frozen I think you could probably still plant some rhubarb crowns â€" please someone correct me if I'm wrong?!?

I too have just got an allotment which is in good condition. Isn't it great??? I will be followint the advice given to you, didn't know there were so many things I could plant yet. Happy allotmenting ;)

I purchased a rhubarb crown last month still to plant. Never got to plant it. Gonna keep it well watered and mulched till end of Feb. For more information try here:

You can plant them any time over winter, but the earlier the better. A couple of years ago I moved some in February, which was definitely too late as I got no crop that year. I'll be moving some again over Christmas.

I've just taken on an allotment and am keen to get going too! Mine is in terrible condition, though, and will need some major clearing and digging doing. I'm planning to clear enough this week (if the rain ever stops!) to get my fruit bushes in, and then clear the rest over the next month as the weather allows, dig in manure and cover until spring.

Thanks for all your suggestions, I have now planted Garlic & Rhubarb, but was unable to find any onion sets, never mind - looking forward to the spring and less rain so that I can keep planting!!

I've never had a crop off onions planted this late, so don't worry about them.
