it's best to leave them to do what they want. though they can grow to about 25 feet. I'm assuming you've had soe flowers off them than hang down? stunning aren't they? I've managed to germinate a seedling from it this year and it's about an inch high.

leave it be and it should provide you with some fruit soon that's very tasty. it's one of the tastiest passionfruits.

though you can prune it if you want to control it. though i'd thin it out and cut out old branches rather than shorten all the stems because that way you may loose next year's flowers.

had no flowers yet, only planted the seed in april 06, left them in pots but then planted them out in the poly border in august before we went to greece, didn't want them dying  :-\ thanks for the advice, will leave them alone and wait for the gorgeous flowers next year

the flowers are possibly the most beautiful thing you'll ever see. if you plant it on a sheltered pergola.....or on a network or support on the ceiling of your poly tunnel, the flower hang down on really long individual stems and look like pink chandaliers hanging from the sky.

I can't stress how pretty they are lol.

i love the common ones too. I love their bubblegum scented flowers and the lovely orange fruit that hang from them later on in the season. it is unfortunately the most hardy one in the UK. I'm waiting on some Incarnata seeds which are apparently the most hardy...but i've never seen them in the UK.

what a beautiful plant, I'm all excited now, can't wait for next year !!

I've been looking for some incarnata plants too - in America they reckon they're hardy down to about -20 Celcius!

eden's supposed to be hardy to -8. we've not had that yet...no where near and mine's pretty much died lol.

Are they hardy to those temperatures in damp conditions though?

probably not. but mine died in the period of last few weeks before the rains started. in that time i hadn't watered the garden for weeks and it hadn't rained either.

but yea they do like good drainage. but i've given it that. i put like a whole bag of sand mixed with manure in the planting hole.

Sorry to upset all you passion fruit lovers, but mine is driving me up the wall  :o
I grew it from a fruit my neighbour gave me. I was so pleased with myself  ;D I gave away so many seedlings to unsuspecting friends.
Now I can't get rid of it.
It completely took over the arch where I originally planted it, I cut it down at the end of the season, and it regrew along with I don't know how many seedlings that must have germinated from fallen fruit  ::)
Evey time I walk past where it was planted I find another plant.
My question is how do I get rid of a passion flower  ::) ;D ;D  ;D  ;D

lol what variety is it? can you post a picture. I mean in a lot of US countries they can become invasive weeds....but our weather never gets hot for long enough.

You could try removing the fruits before they become ripe....that's the only way it spreads. it's not one of those climbers that roots anywhere it touches the ground.

nippie

Hi wahaj, it is a differant variety to yours, it is purpley with the stamens that are supposed to mean diferant things like the disciples etc although I can never remember it all  :D
I thought I had removed all the fruit but oviously not.
Mind it is funny when we are gardening and I hear hubby say here's another b---y passion flower  :D
Unfortunately I didn't take any photos.

I've tried to grow 4 so called hardy varieties so far....and it's the only one that's still alive. My eden's pretty much dead, the violecea looks pretty dead too and the contance elliot seems to be going down the same road aswell.

where as the 5 caeruleas i have seem to totally unaffected by frost.

nippie

Thing is wahaj I am pretty far south west with very little frost.
I am quite limited for space so I think I will be leaving well alone from now on :)

This is my constance elliot....looking misreable:

This is my eden....pretty much gone lol:

this is my violecea...with pretty much no leaves left on it:

and these are my caeruleas....clearly doing much better than the others:
