I have a ceanothus (I think it is Blue Mound), which is looking very straggly and unsymmetrical, branches sticking out all over. How ruthless can I be in pruning it, and is it ok to do it now? Thanks to our weird weather it's even got a few flowers now so maybe I should wait until they die off?

I've only pruned early in the year, so not sure about now.  Although, as it is an early flower probably could do it in the autumn.  No doubt someone knows and will post.  However, you can be pretty ruthless as it sprouts shoots all over even the thickest wood.  Tend to treat it rather like roses, prune hard.   :D
