I've looked in a few seed/supplier catalogs as well as at the local garden center over the last year or so, but no one seems to sell ginger roots for planting.

I admit I don't know a gtreat deal about ginger root, but are they something that can be planted and cultivated (I'm guessing it grows a bit like horseradish).

...anyone got any info?

(p.s. I know how to cook with it - that isnt the problem...its getting/grwoing it that is)

hi, there, we've managed to grow half a  pound of ginger root this year, bought a piece with a small bumo like root on it from asda, planted it in the poly border and just left it, thought I'd lost it, I'd forgotten to mark the spot, then next thing, a shoot like thick spear grass came up, kept growing until it was about 18" tall, then I read to dig it up in october, did that, we left a small rooted piece with the shoot cut down by half in the border and kept the rest, if it gets too cold, I'll just throw some fleece over it, Bob Flowerdew reckons if you've got no protection, you can grow it as a house plant in a pot, also managed some lemon grass in a pot indoors, similar story but a piece from aldi with a bit if root

artichoke

I know this thread is about ginger, but you mentioned lemon grass: I found some seed in Germany and now have 6 little lemon smelling plants, potted up ready to bring in when it gets colder. Very pleased with them. Mean to try ginger next.

saddad

It grows like Horseradish in the tropics, sadly not in the temperate zone!

re lemongrass, it goes mad when it gets going, like spear grass but smells nice, that's why I grow it in a pot

artichoke

Goes mad??? Brilliant, thanks. Most encouraging.

well we only got it in may, we've had three meals, some frozen, some in olive oil for later and some ginger and lemongrass cordial made out of it last week, will leave it to get some strength for next year.

PREMTAL

Hi pigface51,
You can purchase Wild Ginger which is an American cousin of Zingiber Officinale, it has similar flavour and medicinal properties.

The plant is hardy to mtz 3 so would survive without any problem in the UK,the only problem is that the seeds cost $15 for 300 seeds plus postage from a seed Company in Canada.

the link is http://www.richters.com/

PS:- I have successfully grown Chinese Liquorice from seed, the secret was to over winter the plants in a cold greenhouse in their first year.

Out of 15 plants there were 3 survivors but they are now planted out on my allotment and have survived 2 winters. I will harvest two next year and save the third for seed production.

Hope this info is of some help to you. ;D
