My Suttons catalogue has just arrived so guess what I'm gonna be doing this afternoon. I will probably get carried away as usual.
When I get old I don't want people thinking
"What a sweet little old lady"........
                             I want em saying
"Oh Crap! Whats she up to now ?"

Sun's just poked it's head out down here. Looks like I will have to keep my promice to my 4 year old and take her to do some digging. Mum will be pleased.

I'd rather be flying

Sounds like a good idea Shirl and Tony...
I remember when my boys wanted to go digging.. at 13 and 16 it isn't cool, I did bribe them into helping me dig out some trees in the long hols..

lol Shirlton!

My OH has christened the pile of Dobies, T&M, Simpsons and Franchi catalogues by the bed my 'porn collection'. 'All that muttering and drooling,' he says 'over a bunch of ruddy vegetables!'

Robert_Brenchley

That's more sensible than my muttering and drooling over a pile of bits of ancient metal, which don't feed anyone.

Robert
are you good at identifying Roman coins? I do hope so as I have one that I can't find any information on at all :'(

Did a full day course on 'Organic Veg Growing'@Barnsdale, met some lovely peeps, and learned lots. Got soaked in the walkabouts, bought a brolly in the shop, and then the sun came out ::)

Could you put up a pic of the other side of that coin? You can't ID them from one face alone.

Robert_Brenchley

All I can say right now is that it looks 3rd Century, and from the style, it's probably going to be a 'Roman Provincial' minted in one of numerous Greek cities in the eastern Mediterranean which had permission to mint their own copper coinage. I think the first few letters are 'M AVR', and if I'm reading it right, that makes it one of the emperors who added 'Marcus Aurelius' to their names. But show us the reverse, and I should be able to get further with it.

Merry Tiller

This is the reverse, thanks for your help

The only interesting thing I  have ever dug up was a Birmingham workhouse penny. It was a bit bigger than a £2 piece is today, but much heavier. I don't know what they were used for. I didn't think one got paid for being in the workhouse. I will have to scour the net to find out. Will save it for the next rainy day.

The coin's from Nicea in Bithynia, now part of Turkey. I had a feeling it was going to be one of these. The emperor is Severus Alexander; there's a good page on him here: http://www.roman-emperors.org/alexsev.htm . The obverse inscriptions on these are in Greek, and vary a bit, but it will be something like M AVP CEV ALEXANDROC AV. The reverse shows three stylised legionary standards, with the city name, NIKIAE. The letters at the bottom, in what's called the exurge, are omega N.

Brilliant, ta very much for that Robert ;D
