I'm sure you wonderful peopel can help me again. The link is for a photo of my damson trees that I inherited on the plot, when, how and where do I prune them? I have had a lot of fruit from them and thanks to whoever posted the link to damson gin, it's lovely, but they do hang over the plot a lot and cause a lot of shade. I do have a large plot so if its best not to prune then I'm not short of space but I thought it might be better to get them under control a little.

Blimey, that wasn't grown on pixy rootstock :)

I've been looking at Damson all year being indecisive because I'd really like one but a fruit farmer friend said they are hard to control.

The Gloucestershire Orchard Group say:

"Plums, Gages and Damsons should only be pruned between April and September, NEVER winter, while dormant"

so there's a bit of time to decide.

The other bit of advice is that if it's cropping well it doesn't need pruning

Cheers Barnowl looks like I leave it and not make the mistake of planting anything under it again!

I had three at the back of an overgrown plot.... at least 30' tall. One blew over in high winds a couple of years ago....
