Allotments 4 All

Help! Doing a car boot sale for Diabetes charities on Sunday, someone has given us a few Hard Drives, Monitors and keyboards which they said we could sell for spares. If we don't sell them (highly likely!) are there rules about how to get rid of them?

Don't know about rules Katy but there are charities that want such things to reuse them. Can't remember which ones offhand.... :-[

You could also try Freecycle if you're left with them and want to offload?

Have they wiped them clean ??? as there are some unscrupulous peeps out there that can recover some very lucrative information from hard drives like banking details, need I say more :o

There was a programme on TV recently about this, hard drives were finding there way to Africa via our very own Council tips and people in Britain were being fleeced. :o

the harddrives are the biggest concern tbh i would destroy them thats personaly speeking
however as its for a good cause if you have the time tomorrow i sugest formating each drive at least 5 times just to be sure or useing a drive scrubbing programe

Computers are so cheap nowadays and oldish systems so out of date I wouldn't bother wasting the space in your car taking them to a boot sale.

Incidentally I tried to give 2 pallets of computers (that we would still be using today if not for an enforced systems upgrade) away to an African charity and they were refused because they were too low spec.

They can be a problem as along with mobile phones they aren't very bio-degradeable.

For security reasons I would remove the hardrives and dispose of separately. Hitting them (HD's) a dozen times with a hammer will render them unusable. At our local tip the tip hunters will retrieve any computer thrown in possibly for parts maybe for information.

computer waste is classified as special waste - heavy metals in the circuit boards - best route we have found is to ask the local council to collect - or you could always take them to your local tip!

mine go in the wheelie bin - and when they get tipped they get brought out by the scavengers whatever the route!
