Hi

Is it OK that I put my small windfall cooking apples in my compost bin?

Hi,
I can't see any problem with putting windfall apples in the compost - they are only going to rot down like all the other green waste.
In my previous location - we had a few apple trees and all the windfall went to the farmer next door for her pigs.  Where I live now we have a few apple trees and any windfall apples will be given to our new (arriving tomorrow) piglets.
Another thought - you could use the windfall apples to make cider ;D

I allow my windfall apples to rot away, but putting them on the compost shouldn't be a problem. I think people get concerned about putting too much fruit on perhaps because of the high acid levels? If so then just throw a couple of spadefuls of soil on too, that should assist in levelling it off.

I did reply earlier but lost the connection and couldn't get back on before I had to go out!  I always put my windfalls on my compost, have done for years with no problem.  And the ones that fall off and rot in the autumn, we have far too many to use so they all go on the compost.

Yet another thought - they make an excellent apple jelly. :)

Just remember to remove any wriggly bits  ;D -easily spotted after cooking.

I let mine lie where they fall, and dig them in later. Seems a lot of effort to collect them and carry them to the compost heap.

When I was with my first husband we collected windfalls all over the county and a friend put them through his cider press - we had huge leaky barrels all over the living room and in the cellar, and the cider was WONDERFUL..... Happy Days.

I cook 'em, compost 'em or leave 'em.  If it is green (well, vegetable based) it goes on the compost heap!  Funny though, all those I leave to rot under the trees never sprout!
