Mine say they can be sown mid Dec - end Jan and March and April and harvested Aug - Dec.

Sowing instructions from Suttons:
For exhibition, sow thinly Dec/Jan in a propagator on a windowsill or in a greenhouse at approx 15-20oC.  Cover seeds with 6mm (1/4") sieved compost.  Germination 18-24 days.  Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle in 90mm (3"0 pots, grow on and plant out into prepared soil manured the previous autumn.  For culinary use sow thinly direct outside Mar/Apr in finely raked firm soil at a depth of 13mm (1/2") in rows 30cm (12") apart.  Thin seedlings to 15cm (6") between plants.  Sowing - Cropping - 24 weeks

Hope this helps!

I sowed mine last week, 5 to a module, they have come up with 1-3 per module so there they'll stay - on windowsill or in greenhouse - til large enough to put in the ground. It's an experiment - I'll also sow in Spring and see how both do :)

aha, thanks baby.  So SS, does this mean they are hardy enough to stay in all winter??  And will yuo be thinning them out into singles, or planting them in 3somes??  And what chance do you reakon they will have against the dreaded white rot on my plot????

Yes, they are supposed to be capable of overwintering ::) Will cosy them up wiv straw and a mesh cloche to give them a better chance. Threesomes 9 inches apart - and I had no room except in the old onion bed, so they will be taking their chances with the white rot on my plot too :-\

My plottie neighbour says to sow Ailsa Craig on Boxing Day!

It is common practice to sow any onion seed that is to be grown as a large specimine on Boxing Day if you are not to full with the Boxing Day dinner or to tipsie after the Boxing Day wine and Sherry  ;D
