I understand that a lot of these messages are sent out to see if your e-mail address is still valid.

If the e-mail is opened, it activates a whole pile of other sites to send you their info. The secret is to block and then delete them before the envelope opens.   Such a pain!! >:(

Had a spoof today too. I have found there is usually a threat of some kind i.e. todays was as follows.....'if you choose to ignore our request, you leave us no choice but to temporaly (their spelling not mine) suspend your account'   I just forwarded it to spoof@paypal and they verified it as such within minutes.
Smile, it confuses people.

I can't recommend Zonealarm too highly; I've been using the free version for years, since the days when only security conscious companies knew about such things. It intercepts so many probes that I have to have the alerts switched off or I'd do nothing else but read them!
