Weeding Peas

My peas are growing up a chicken wire and bamboo cane structure. No problem with the peas, but it's a nightmare trying to weed tight up against the wire between the plants.

Anyone got great pea structure ideas for next year, or ideas of how to get to the little tinkers?

Got a picture katy?

No pics, sorry. Its vertical chicken wire, the length of the row, with canes woven through and pushed into ground at 3-4 foot intervals.

Is it worth weeding, apart from hoeing as close as you dare? When you finally take the peas out, the weeds will easily come with them. I just snap off any flowering heads.

Fierce arguments arise here as to whether weeds out-compete the peas/beans and transpire any moisture still in the ground - or whether they help keep the ground damp and cool. I like the latter theory. :)

and perhaps pulling out weeds close to the peas would disturb the roots?
It'll be better next year

Ooooh I love an excuse to avoid weeding!
Thanks folks!

Another vote for 'leave the weeds'.
My lottie neighbour pointed out a row of weeds to me the other day, and said they were holding up his peas so he didn't need pea sticks ;D

Yes, I'm with the weeds holding up the peas group - I have finally found a constructive use for the Horsetail ;D ;)

I dont weed between my peas, I put down black plastic sheets to save me also it conserves moisture

I don't weed my peas either, but I do make sure I remove all flower heads long before they open so they don't add to the weed population.  I have used chicken wire and pea sticks in the past, and both are as tricky as the other for weeding.
