I've just picked my first outdoor tomato before any are ready in my greehouse. The variety is sub-arctic plenty and is reputed to be the earliest maturing outdoor tom. It was developed by the US forces to grow in Greenland.

Any chance of seed later?

Absolutely. I'm probably going to eat a couple and use the rest for seed. It's already popular for next year on our site and I'll make sure to have plenty for Swap Shop.

The plant only seems to grow to about 18 inches but is laden with fruit and flowers.

There is no disputing that Sub Arctic Plenty will ripen outside even under adverse conditions-I just didn`t rate the flavour much though.

Cleo, what are your favourite outdoor toms - for puree/passata and for good eating - in local conditions?

If you could see my veg garden :-[-It`s light soil at best and west facing-everything is suffering.

Outdoor toms I like(not all growing this year)-Principe Bhorgese,San Marzano,Outdoor Girl(an oldie but good)Gardeners Delight,the Del series from Simpsons,Tiny Tim . Ive never grown `Ferline`

Don`t much go for Sub Arctic Plenty or Garden Pearl-they crop well but they do not tickle my taste buds

The comfrey you sent me looked like it had good fen soil on it.

Forgot to mention `Harbinger`-that`s not bad

Admission time-the Comfrey grows just outside my bigger greenhouse-I throw away all the spillage from MP compost over it. Our soil is very light-but 5 miles to the East it get`s heavier
