Allotments 4 All

Another one for you experts!  Now I think Deeds, you may have given this to me, but I might also have grown it from seed......  These little peachy pink flowers are about the size of a penny, on the thinnest of stems, and come from small strappy leaves.  It is growing in dappled shade beside the pond and seems quite happy there.  Any ideas?

Hi Emma,  It's Freesia laxa, a South African native - also used to be called

Anomatheca laxa
or
Lapeirousia cruenta
or
Anomatheca cruenta

I think the taxonimist have now moved onto something elseand stopped messing about with this one.

But it's still lovely :)

ooh yes I agree - it's one of my favourites. Very few nurseries stock them, and I have got some self-seeded ones growing in one of my acer pots...! Potterton's have them if you want more!

It also comes in pure white and white with a red centre and if it likes you it is a seed weed of massive proprtions! I have been slowly but surely getting rid of the red one for the last few years and at last there seems to be none left in the Alpine house! Hurrah, fingers crosssed!

Send them to me please if you find any more!  ;D ;D - I've spent £££ on buying them!!!! I had loads in an alpine tray but they never got going again after the winter, so I'm back to waiting for the immature ones in the acer to flower. Ho hum!

What a pretty flower,great pic too.

That little beaut can seed itself at will wherever it pleases!  I plant to try and save the seeds and sow to up the group.  Eric, sown fresh??

I preume so, since I have never either collected the seeds nor sown them deliberately.

Eric, they also come in white with a red blotch, pure white with no markings at all, a beautiful pale pink, a crushed strawberry colour, lavender and blue.

I am working hard on bulking them up for sale. :)
