Mine were quite 'thin' last year but still edible. Perhaps it is to do with our temperatures and number of hours of sunshine (or lack of it)?

Sure I read somewhere that they have quite a high need for calcium - about the same amount of calcium as of nitrogen for example. But not sure if this is relevant to the fleshiness of them?
