A lot of my autumn-planted onions have got their leves bent right over at the top of the bulb, even though only the tips have gone yelloe. Does this mean they are ready for lifting, or something more sinister?

Nothing to be worried about, they are beginning to ripen. Once the stems turn yellow, then you can lift them for use during the summer.
The impossible is just a journey away ...

Curry, so even if the tops have fallen over, I just wait til they go yellow? About 50% have toppled :) What's usual harvesting time?

I've started lifting my autumn planted onions as and when I need them. The green tops get chopped up with the root and are also very good. I'm going for the largest onions. None of them are bent or yellowing yet.
