Hi there

My tomatoes (San Marzano and Harbinger) in the greenhouse are really doing well and have 4 - 5 trusses each.  The book states "nip out the growing tip once the plant has set".  What does' set' mean. ???

Sorry if it is a stupid question but after all the looking after I would hate to go and do something wrong now. ;D

If you can't be a good example -- then you'll just have to be a horrible warning....

Fruit setting means when you can see the baby toms once the petals of the flowers drop.

The lowest truss will set first and then the next one up ans so on.

Aahh thanks Jerry. ;D

I will wait for that - not much flowers on the plants yet though (as I have been removing the extra shoots).  But I will be patient.  I cannot believe it but my toms are growing by spurts every day and I have to keep tying them in.

Most of mine have loads of flowers now. They're out of doors and I want plenty of fruit so I'm not removing any branches; most of them are bush types but I'm growing a few cordons as bush as well.

Many times I have tried to answer and I do not know how to put it-any book that is so vague should be thrown away.

How many trusses you let set depends on space and the growing medium-4-8?-so much depends on variety.

Nice varieties-and they both do well outside

if you nip out the growing point that means it needs to start a new growing point before it can produce any more trusses. That's fine towards the end of the season, but not now.

Hi     I only pinch the growing head out when the plant reaches the roof,

Jitterbug

Thanks for all the tips guys.  I will leave the plants alone from now on.  They only have a little bit to go and then they will hit the roof.  I have a very small greenhouse.

Good luck with your tomatoes everyone.
