Got some more ground available now on a new plot we have taken over. Is it too late to plant sweetcorn from seed? Planted some a couple of weeks ago and came up within a couple of days but I do appreciate it needs a fairly long growing season and plenty of sun to ripen.

Last year was my 1st attempt at sweet corn in the UK.

As I only got the plot a year ago I planted seeds about now!

Sowed them in loo rolls helped with the lack of root disturbance too.

Had a great crop - so go for it !!  Nothing to loose ;)

I'm in the south though, Will that make a difference?

Possibly, i'm up't north---  Yorkshire. Think I will give it a go.probably get some extremely cheap seed from Lidl (29p) and shove them in--worth a try

Try it-but on looking where you are-you will need a fairly long summer-it gets chilly in those parts :)

Most of my first sowing failed to germinate, so i planted some more in bog rolls about 2 weeks ago, just planted them out tonight. I grew them under cover in the green house, and they got going really quickly - most are already 8" - 10" high.

It helps to grow an early variety rather than maincrop. Last year I grew Earlibird, and by Aug 20th (our Open Day) they were just past their best.

Another good early is Northern Extra Sweet, did very well for a crop early August last year.

Just an update about the late planted sweetcorn-picked the first cobs a couple of days ago--they have actually done better than the early crop with bettef pollination of the kernals.
