I gave my mum one of my aubergine plants but now wonder if it will pollinate on it's own or should I take some pollen from my flowers over?  If so do I just collect a little and dab it on the flowers that end???

It will be fine on it's own though I help the pllination on mine with a soft brush. They are perfect flowrers so have both male and female parts so you do not need a pollination partner.

Setting fruit is rarely a problem with Aubergines but getting them to a decent size before the RSM take over can be!

I agree with Jerry-and Red Spider Mite can be a problem-mist the plants if you can-or just keep the humidity up

Now this is strange - I mention it just for interest.

We grow aubs, toms, peppers & cus in the same 'house - it is only, ever, that the cus get RSM.

I grow my Aubergines and Cucumbers in the same greenhouse, but only the Aubs suffer, perhaps they don't like tough outdoor type Cucs like crystal apple as much?

'Fraid both my cues and aubs last year got the RSM really badly... can't say anything about toms as they're all outside.

It's all a bit of an experiment as I've never grown Aubs before, I have four plants - two in the conservatory and two in upturned growbags outside.  I think the ones outside went out too early - they are alive but not growing much.  The two in the conservatory - which although light doesn't get direct sun - I pinched the side shoots from one plant and left one plant to bush.  Thye are in pots roughly the same size as an upturned growbag. 

I have one flower (yipee!!) on the conservatory pinched out.  The one I gave my mum is in her south-facing conservatory and she has a few flowers - we shall see who fairs the best in the end!


They are very pretty flowers though!

They like warmth; the ones in my mini greenhouse are really doing well now after sulking all through the cold weather. I'm going to keep them in there as long as I can.
