having done a search for this topic, i have already figured out that it's mostly cosmetic, wont affect the yield overly

the question i have is: should i harvest the garlic now? the leaves are pretty much affected i am afraid. lots and lots of brown pustules on the leaves. the neighbouring onions seem fine to me.

the other question: i left the leaves on last year because i used them to braid the garlic into.... well, braids. does the rust mean i should cut the leaves off to about an inch above bulb, and try to make a braid another way (layering between two strands of string i think was the alternative?)

My garlic has been similarly affected in the last week, so I will be interested to see what comments arise ...

I have lots of Babbington leeks and they get rust, sometimes I dig out and destroy the worst affected but is it causing a real problem?

well i  have lifted them - needed the space in any case for the next crop.

i cut off the foliage and destroyed that, the bulbs are drying indoors now. i will make some pickled garlic i think, and leave some for storage, too

Were the garlic a good size Svea as I wouldn't mind lifting mine, but they are still incredibly green and lush looking.  This is the first year I haven't had rust on the plot!  Usually end up with icky leeks and garlic from rust.

they were an ok size - certainly not small.

i dont mind the size as i have lots anyways - pull a couple and see what you make of them?

mine were planted in november, purple wight or some such variety.

Super.  Mine are purple wights and planted probably a similar time.  I am dragging the urchins up there tomoz so I might get them to dig a couple to see what they reveal.
