Svea

dear all,

having been away on holiday for a week, i had to put all my seedlings in the garden so they could aurvive on rain (rather than die withering)
have been to survey the damage this morning - and all but threeceleriac plants have been razed to the ground, probably by slugs.

is it too late to sow more/start from scratch? seeing as they take two months to grow from seed to planting out size?

if too ate, does anyone have a few spare plugs - i was going for about 10 in total so would looks at about 7 or 8?

many thanks

Svea, not been up to the plot today (just got up, on nights) but unless slugs have done their worst, I think I have 5 or so that I don't have the space for. Thay are Celeriac Prinz, about 4-5ins tall. If you have any tips about how to post plants and send me your addy I will post them tomorrow!

i would gratefully reveive your plants. how to post? i dont know - does anyone have any ideas? put them into kitchen roll/toilet roll innerts if they are not too tall yet? depends on the size of the (compost) plug, too.....???

I've received plants in the post like this:

Roots wrapped in damp kitchen paper to keep moist.

This was wrapped in cling film and then the whole thing in kitchen foil (bigger than the plant) to be about the size of an empty water bottle.  The stiffness of the foil seems to protect the plants from moving about too much and being knocked within the bottle.  I think bubble wrap would work as well...

The water bottle had been cut near the bottom on 3 of the 4 sides, opened up, and the foil wrapped plants put in.  The bottom was then taped up with parcel tape, and address label added, and off they were posted....

The rigidity of the bottle really does protect the plants in the post rather well :)

I've received a large bottle in the post this way, with mint cuttings, and the plants arrived perfectly.  I've sent out little plants this way in a small bottle myself, and popped the bottle in either another envelope or a jiffy bag...

HTH :)
