Hi,

I'm going to grow sweet corns for the first time this year.
How many (minimum) plants do I need to grow in block to have a good pollinations?

Thanks :)

I would grow at least 9 to 12, more if possible.

I grow 2 blocks of 32 plants.

Thanks Jerry :)

I'm pleased to hear that because I wanted to plant about 20 plants. ;D

What is more important is, how much do you like sweetcorn? :)
It is one of the crops that tastes incredible straight from the lottie and it freezes brilliantly. I can't get enough and it occupies about 1/3 of the total available space on my little Lottie. I underplant it with catch crops like lettuce and spinach and also my squash plants thrive in between the stalks. Have fun and enjoy    ;D

When you interplant squah and sweetcorn how far apart should the plants be?
Do you leave a sweetcorn out and fill it with a squash plant or do both plants need  more space?

Yep, as many as you can fit in.  ;D ;D

Last year was the first time for me, I grew about 40, and got about 15-20 decent cobs, although I was late at putting them in. And the weather didn't help...
This year I've got about 60 so far, and another 40 to go in the propagator in the next few days.
I hoe, I hoe, then off to work I go.

... and how far apart do you plant sweetcorn if you're growing it on its own? My first go this year 8)

We tend to go for 36 Ovation as the main, and you should get an average of 1.8 cobs per plant if doing well, that is about a freezer drawer full, and can last until the next crop!
We also do about 20 Minipop for chinese / stirfry cooking. Try to keep them apart as it can affect the supersweets, but you should be picking the minipop before it starts to pollinate!

You have changed my mind, I'm going to grow more.  8) I do love sweet corns. I've been getting sweet corns from a PYO for the last few years. They are sold in a box so not really PYO but still very sweet and delicious. ;D Can't wait to have fresh sweet corns! :-*

Get your freezer ready!
